Tomatoes in the polytunnel
« on: June 05, 2009, 08:43 »
My tomatoes are coming on in the poly but HELP how do I support them?I put canes in alongside but do I tie the toms onto the canes, as they grow? The strings seem a much better idea, but I have no where above that I could tie the strings to.
Have though about putting in a pole at either side then running a long cane to each one....have members better ideas? Your help appreciated.

I found canes weren't strong enough to support a plant when it becomes laden with fruit. I have a simple frame made with a couple of stout uprights and a long horizontal metal pole going across. I dangle long strings down to nearly ground level at each tomato position. Its easy just to twist each plant around the string in the morning or whenever it has grown a bit more. It saves a bit of work in the long run. Also I can tap the frame in the mornings to help pollination.
