Garlic, when will it be ready
« on: November 09, 2009, 16:28 »
Hi All

We've just planted the garlic today, but wondered when will it be ready as we are limited in space and dont want next years summer beds to be taken up with garlic and onions which is whats in at the mo.

Thanks

It should be ready in July and onions follow a bit later on. If you aren't crop rotating, maybe you could plant some sweetcorn around them as they won't shade them too much.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I think the tradition is after mid-summers day, but mine were into July before the tops collapsed.  Winter onions and shallots were ready about the same time.

.....oh dear July??

So in that case, when I lift them what can I plant out of the "ordinary crops" that doesn't have to be in too early?

winter brassicas and swede would be ok time wise but don't know how that fits with any rotation plans you have.
Could get a crop of green beans in, specially if you start them in pots so they are waiting, likewise courgette plants. Chard, spinach...can't think of anything else......

Leeks followed mine - not the rotation plan, allium following allium, but needs must with an over supply.  Seems to have worked okay, but brassicas & kale would have been more sense.

No problems with putting the brassicas in there then then :)
Just give them some blood fish and bone or growmore and make sure you tread the bed before planting as they like firm soil.

Endive - curly - for blanching follows on nicely stands the cold well and I am cutting it now. Tied up to blanch it is not bitter and it is never cheap in the shops.

It helps if you like it though............
