Lose some, win some
« on: August 30, 2010, 21:48 »
I've just lost all my outdoor tomatoes on my lottie - blight. Thank goodness I kept some in the green house.  Just feeling a bit miserable about it.   :( :(

Saved the potatoes though!!

And ........Got a bumper crop of sweetcorn, and carrots though.  :)

You guys know how it feels  don't you????
Wash your hands, stay at home, distance yourself

After 3 consecutive years of blight disasters, this year I grew blight resistant outdoor Legend and Ferline F1 for the first time - not totally resistant but apparently are the last ones to succumb in a bad season.  I was amazed over the weekend to find both varieties till going strong & no sign of the dreaded disease  :D  I am well impressed.  However, I have decided not to tempt fate and have harvested the green toms to ripen indoors especially with the forecast cold nights.
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.

I posted a picture a week or so ago of my 15lbs of toms rescued from my 2 blighted plants.

They have all survived and are ripening nicely on the kitchen windowsill (a major courgette provencale/pasta sauce making session beckons!)

If you get them off the plants in time they will ripen, but keep an eye on them because if the blight has reached the fruits they will also blacken and rot.

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Oh lulu, I do feel for you.  I'll never forget the utter despair I felt when I returned from a week away with work a few years ago to find all of my tomato plants keeled over with blight.  The fruit was ruined so couldn't even be salvaged for chutney.  Hubbie who had been watering them said "I thought they didn't look very well".  Bit of an understatement I think!!!
I hope the rest of your crops make up for the loss of the toms.
