Broad beans in flower!
« on: November 27, 2010, 14:25 »
I planted some broad been seed for an over wintered crop, for harvest early next year, but from a combination of me planting a bit early and a warmer autum, they are now starting to flower!

I have them now covered by one of my small polly tunnel units.

Will they die off, or will they flower again early next year?

I should think that a lot of the energy would go into 'making beans', so I would nip out the flowers, hoping they will flower again at a more 'natural' time.    Cheers,   Tony.

I would echo that - nipping off the flowers that won't do anything at this time of year should result in making stronger plants for next year.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

It is quite a long, long way off their normal cropping time.... the flowers are not likely to come to anything so help the plants by (as everyone has said) removing the blooms and leaving them to try again in the spring. It will conserve that plants energy and hopefully prevent any type of fungus / decay that would befall the flowers if they were left.

Off with their heads!!

PS My autumn sown are still sat sitting in pots thinking about it!! (Late to say the least)

What I would expect to see happen is that the shoots you have now will be damaged by the frost over the Winter so the plants will look very poorley in the Spring.

It is likely that more shoots will come from the base in the Spring and these will give you a crop.

Just leave them alone and talk to them occasionally.
