Yep - I know there is a link under my avatar .... but according to the forum rules I am not allowed to direct people to it or say to look at my profile or avatar where it is located etc. etc.. So I have to PM if required.    (its only a blog but its not hosted on the forum)

Yet you can post a direct link to T&M  Sounds a bit extreme.

Hi Digga - I originally bought compost and soil enhancer. Then added some home made compost. Then each year I just added loads of fresh horse manure, chicken pellets and a bit of growmore. Also added a bit of home made compost every few years. everything grew really well.

Well this year i want to grow organically or as best as i can and was going to use compost but was a bit dubious about where or what the cheaper compost was made from.

Regards soil enhancer i presume you mean that rockdust stuff?

One other thing about containers could you grow the same crop in the same container year after year or would you need to rest with other crops the next year as you do with normal soil in vegetable plots?

If you're clearing out the growing medium each year you can, but if keeping the same medium in the same container I would rotate perosnally.

What I do is empty the containers onto the beds each year and start afresh, that way the beds get mulched as well.

Digga I never really rotated mine... I did mainly onions and squashes.. At the end of the season I would put all the compost in a few wheelie bins etc. and bring it out again in spring. So it I used the same compost all the time.. Right or Wrong?? dunno..

The enhancer was some bags of compost like stuff - it was probably farmyard manure or similar - had loads of bark chippings in it as well.
Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... 2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..

About the bottom drying out in these containers - what if i inserted a piece of copper pie at the beginning with holes in and when watering made sure a good amount was put down the copper tube would this work?

Only if you are using a wheelie bin sort of depth.. normal pots will be fine.

Cheers Gavin. I wish this weather would warm up so I can plant the spuds.

Thought about starting a few off in pots inside the spare room but she won't let me ::)
