Bantam Hen Problem - Help Urgently Required
« on: February 20, 2010, 17:18 »
Having just been up to check my chickens ne of my bantam hens was sat in the corner not moving whilst all my other chickens were outside running round.  We took her out of their house to find her alive and breathing with her eyelids closed and not responding to anything.  Almost as if she is unconscious.  We have brought her inside the house and since being inside she seems to be moving her neck slightly but still her eyelids are shut.

I have not noticed her acting any differently over the past couple of days and she is only two years old.

Can anyone suggest what this could be?

It could be lots of things I'm afraid - can you keep her in for a day or two where it is warmer? Have you felt to see if she is egg bound? She may be about to lay a soft shelled egg and this can make them seem a bit ill but once it has been laid they are usually ok. Does she have a temperature? Feel under her wing then check a healthy one to see if they feel any different. Is she breathing heavily or has a rasping sound?
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thank you for the fast response.  Having done a bit more research on egg bound chickens this might be the cause.  Currently keeping her warm to try and relax her and she seems to be breathing more visibly and has opened her eyes a few times so seems to be perking up.

are you able to feel an egg? If you are then it is advised to place her in some warm water for about 30 minutes to help her relax, this may be enough to help her pass the egg. Once done then dry her with a hair dryer on a low heat setting apperntly they quite like this. If you type in egg bound on the search facility on this page you should come up with lots of info about this  :)

See thing is having checked her over she doesnt look like she has an egg inside her.  She does however feel rather cold.  We shall keep an eye on her and I shall let you know how she gets on.

You could warm her up a little by wrapping a hot water bottle in a towel and sitting her on it - just don't make it too hot though, just enough to gently warm her. It may make her feel a bit better too.

Thank you for the advice.  We have put an electric blanket wrapped in a towel on a low heat setting under her.  Should hopefully perk up over the coming hours...

Well a quick update:  She died last night.  Not sure why but again the same symptoms as mentioned above.  A great shame as she would have only been 3 this year and didnt show any signs over the past couple of days of being unwell or dying.

Ahh thank you.  Thankfully the other girls and boys look ok but I shall definately be keeping a close eye on them over the coming days!

Thank you though for your support and suggestions.  Cant really say what happened but I can hope she had a nice life any rate!

Sorry to hear about your bantie  :(
It's very difficult with animals to tell what is wrong and with chickens it is often too late when you spot symptoms. Even if you had got her to the vet they only have stock cures (anti biotics, anti inflammatories etc. which are often prescribed too late to be able to help). I am sure she had a very happy life with you and at least she was warm and dry when she died.
