In Preporation for the search for potatoes in the new year, will any one be trying any different varieties other than the usual types?

Am after a variety thats a good all rounder so any suggestions will be great.

Also i missed the slot last year and am wondering when is the best time to plant main crop , eary crop and late crop....or do they go in at the same time?

Sprouts here i come!!!!

Thread title amended as there is currently an identical one running

Hiya

I was desperate to find a good baking potato this year that wasn't full of holes.  I discovered Picasso.  It's is wonderful.  Good for mashing too.   It doesn't need lot of butter to make it tasty (Though I still put a bit in!)

Merry Christmas

I am pretty much going for the usual, reliables, 'cos I'm not good with failure...

Will be Charlotte, Cara, Lady Christl, Sante, Kestrel and Pentland Javelin for me.
With possibly a few Vales Sovereign thrown in as a trial.

Put 'em in at a similar time, its the harvesting time that varies...

Phill :) :)

Having experimented over the years, I've settled on Pentland Javelin, Lady Christl, Charlotte, Kestrel, Ambo (Big Bakers), Desiree & Sarpo Mira (Back up in case of blight).

I note 4 in common with Cheshire Phil.

Hi All

I'll be going with Cara which hasn't let me down in my 2 yrs.

Plus trying Home Guard, Foremost and a blue variety whose name escapes me from T & M.

Setanta is now the most blight resistant variety you can get. It has the same tuber blight resistance as Sarpo Mira but scores better for foliage blight. I think in the next few years it will be very popular as it is a great tasting spud. There are a few garden centres stocking these now. I will be trying Mayan Twilight and see how these new variations taste.

Yes it is. I knew a river was in the name.

The Mersey didn't quite sound right.

Hi Pompey,

I've got a few of those coming as well.

I told my Mother I was going to grow some blue spuds and she says no way will she take them to try them.  :)

I am now tempted to try growing some of those resolutely blue fleshed ones to quietly bung a few her way.  :)

I like the sound of the "Mersey" spud though. "Mersey Royals"?

Too much like "mersey trout to me" ;) Ive got some Blue danube coming as well. Just a question, but Ive gone for 2 packs of 20 seed potatoes - should this cover a third of a half plot as I think? Sorry but I havent got the exact measurements to hand.
