Post by: dianemk73 on August 17, 2009, 13:09
I have just found a great product that really works to get rid of red mite. Its called Mi-Tex and is only available from Solway Feeders. You spray all over coop and repeat after 6 days. GONE!!!!

Can recommend Solway Feeders - have previously purchased various small items from them and although they are in Scotland, deliveries to South Wales have been very prompt!!  :)

Yes I appear to be mite free. I have to repeat the process on Thursday but my hens have started laying again back in the nest boxes. There were loads of them and when I applied the Mi-tex I saw just how many as they were all up my arms!!! I emptied out and thoroughly cleaned a spray container which holds 500 mls and added a fifth of the Mi-tex. Unlike powder the spray gets into all of the cracks. I can highly reccomend this product

I discovered I had red mite at the weekend and having trawled the forum, I found a recommendation about spraying neat dettol into the house.  You can only imagine the satisfaction I felt when I saw the little beggars crawling out of the crevices and dying where they crawled through the dettol.  I think my infestation was only just beginning because my girls were still happy to go into the house at night and lay in the boxes but I was really glad to be able to deal with it immediately.  I will spray again later this week in case of hatching eggs though.  In the meantime, the house smells fab (if you like Dettol  :))

I got a bit paranoid after my first red mite infestation and scrubbed the whole house with jeyes and then painted it with a liberal dose of liquid paraffin. It has worked a treat.
