Problems with a Rotovator
« on: September 20, 2008, 14:23 »
Hi all,

First post so go easy on me. Have had my own allotment now for about a year. I currently have a Honda F200 rotovator that was given to me as it doesn't have a spark. It is an early 80's model with a Honda G100 4 stroke vertical shaft engine fitted. Having checked all the obvious things like spark plug, stop switch, earth points the only thing that is left is the Honda CDI unit. Sadly this is no longer made by Honda and not available. The unit is showing it's age but would be prefectly useable with some TLC.

Has anybody got any experience of this engine or can offer advice? I thought about trying to retro fit a GV100 engine from a Honda mover but not sure if it will fit. I have a new FG110 Tiller so i'm not desperate for it but I hate to throw things away.

I don't think I have ever had to replace a Honda coil in over twenty years of fixing small engines, so bad luck! does the engine have a low oil sensor fitted? that could be on the blink.
if you need a coil, it might be worth having a look at the older style 17" mower. I think that used a very similar engine, and the coil could (if you're lucky) be made to fit 9 worth a look, at least )

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I think the coil is ok, i'm pretty sure it's the seperate CDI that is at fault. There is no oil sensor.

Hi,

Four wires coming from the CDi. One is the HT lead and goes to the plug. One goes to the engine kill switch. One goes to the coil. the last goes to a pulser unit next to the coil.

I have so far, made sure the earth connections are good, put a new spark plug in, cleaned up the ignition coil faces, cleaned up the magnetic pads under the flywheel. Just won't spark.

The CDI is sealed so can't get in it. The CDI is also discontinued by Honda.

If you e-mail me at adam.peake(AT)btopenworld.com I can send a few pics I have.

It would be a real shame to scrap the F200 for no reason. This is the same model on Ebay at the moment:

Thanks
