Spring onions
« on: June 18, 2008, 14:10 »
My Spring onions "white Lisbon" and "Eiffel" are taking a long time to get to a decent bulb size.  They were much quicker last year.  Planted some mid March still not decent size and started them of indoors.  Packets say 8-10 weeks to harvest.  Even following the time on packet they are a bit late.

Anyone else.

EDIT oh yeah and they are spring grow ones not winter hardy ones.

My white lisbon have been slow too, haven't picked any yet and they have been in the ground since the end of March/start of April.

Same here. White Lisbon went in 20/03. still no thicker than 4-5mm. Very poor germination as well.

Glad its not just me must be the weather then.  Had poor germination with a year old pack as well, so got some fresh, both slow to bulb up to decent size.

Wonder what there idelal conditions are, last year we had an early heat wave.

I don't wonder about the ideal conditions, I'm just not growing them any more.

I have always found spring onions to be very slow and nothing like the 8-10 weeks it says on the packets. They then get inundated with weeds   .
I was thinking of trying to grow them in soaked hydroleca or vermiculite or some such medium in the greenhouse to see if i could speed things up.
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

I planted a load of last year's paris silverskin in a huge cauldron thngy, and I got one onion, and it was about 3 inches high!  But the red salad onions outside are nearly all coming up, but they are still on 2-3 inches high!

my white lisbons have all germinated and I have even had to thin them out, but they are slow to grow to a decent size.  they are about 6 inches high but almost like grass in thickness.

I think I will start mine earlier next year in conservatory again and wait until they are bigger to plant out.

Have never grown Spring Onions before this year but I tried Red Spring Onion "Furio" alongside carrots in a raised bed (2ft high) and I harvested them last night and have resown to see if I can get anymore.
Sorry to be no help but maybe try them
