Title: flubenvet?
Post by: mickwood on August 11, 2008, 08:54
erm...how do I use it?  :?

Just bought some and maybe I'm being a bit thick but I don;t understand how to use it? I could use it if I had a flock of 100 pheasants but in relation to 3 hens I'm stumped!?

I have a feeder, do I fill that with a mixture of flubenvet and feed? or should I put a seperate bowl of flubenvet and feed and replace the feeder once it's gone??

Thanks

Hi Mick

Have a look here at Aunties thread all about worms etc she tells ya about dosing

http://www.chat.allotment-garden.org/viewtopic.php?t=4348

I tend to mix said amount with a bit of oil on some mealworms that way I know they're gonna eat it :)

That's brilliant! A pinch of flubenvet, per bird, mixed with oil (sunflower?) and mealworms, each day for 7 days! :D

Should I treat each bird seperately to ensure they each get their dose?

I know others here with just a few birds have just popped a pinch  of flubenvent on a grape or piece of bread and fed to the birds  individually by hand for 7 days.
I just measure 6g into 5kg of layers pellets mix well, making up more feed as and when over the 7 day period. You have reminded me though getting to that time of year again....where has the summer gone! :?

I tried the grape method and managed the first hen, but then 3 wanted the second grape and chased each other round for it, then it became a free for all and I lost track of who had eaten and who hadn't  :?

I then mixed up a batch of pellets with a weighed dose for 2 days at a time and fed them from that. At least then I knew they'd all had a fair amount each.

But if your chooks are a bit more patient and will queue up, then the gape or worm method is certainly foolproof.  :)

Good luck and watch your fingers !

I mixed mine with the feed and that worked well. Was a bit worried I wouldn't get the right size pinch and would overdose or underdose them.

I think I'll use the oil/mealworm method. As I only have 3 of the dears I can easily only take 1 as a time out of the run - dose them up and send em back!  :D

I would be more worried about the people that eat the eggs.  Which will be you and your family as you cant sell them for a week, or give them away.

There is no egg withdrawal time with flubenvet. There is however if you plan on eating the birds.

True but "Bestpet can supply Flubenvet only if: the medicated feed is mixed at the house where the birds are kept and those birds and their eggs are not reared for sale or supply for consumption off the premises"  www.bestpet.co.uk

That's probably because its not prescribed by a vet, if it was not safe to eat the eggs then it would say so regardless of who was eating it. On a commercial scale then surely a vet would prescribe, fill in the appropriate form and the customer would eat and be none the wiser.  :)

I think that is more down to the fact that internet retailing of medication is a grey area and that wording covers their backs.
It's crazy the hoops that bricks and mortar retailers have to jump through to sell wormers etc. compared to how easy it is to sell online. It is something that the VMD is looking at.

I am in communication with the manufacturer regarding the imminent release of a pack size and formulation suited to back garden poultry.

This is the information I have received from the manufacturer regarding withdrawal times:

There is zero withdrawal on chicken eggs and poultry can be slaughtered for consumption 7 days after the end of treatment.
