Beetroot
« on: August 08, 2009, 20:37 »
Theres not enough again  :(  I could probably get 1 more sowing in couldn't I?

I've been starting them off in cell tray and then planting out. I wonder if Id get a better (higher) yield by sowing direct, I have tried a few lines before but I always end up with very small misshapen beets or very patchy germination.

What sort of quantities are people growing? I'll happily boil 3 for a veg serving on a dinner so a short row is gone in 3-4 meals.

I tried both ways (cells and direct sown).  The one's in cells started off quicker than the direct sown, but both sowings seem to have ground to a halt now   so I don't think it matters which way you do it, except that you can control them more if you start them in cells; ie distance apart etc.

Last August when harvesting onions I spilt a load of beetroot seeds so I left them and they germinated fine and grew much quicker than the module sown ones; I am soaking some today [burpees golden] and have ordered some chioggia from fleabay and will sow when they arrive - I'll sow them all direct and pop a cloche on to get them off to a good start....if the weather doesn't stay as sunny as it was today.

I had part of a packet of beetroot seed left and bunged it in to a small, newly vacated spot last weekend.  Already up and doing well.

If you've got the space you may as well give it a go.

I just keep sowing every month from March (under a cloche this year -- worked a treat) through to this month,

Sowed some golden beet last week, which I hope to keep some to roast with Christmas lunch  :D

We just love it  :)

I sow about every 3-4 weeks from April about 20' rows, straight in the soil. Not had a problem.

I don't thin out as I only grow to golf ball size & find they can gently push each other aside.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
