My potatoes look weird!
« on: May 31, 2009, 08:03 »
I have made a new raised bed and improved the soil using rotted horse manure.  The Maris Piper seed potatoes that I have planted are growing with very twisted/deformed leaves and shoots.  What is wrong with them??  I have used some of the same seed potatoes in a growing sack and they are coming up fine??  Do I have some sort of potato disease, if so what do I do??

Oh dear.

I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings for your first post, but it appears you may have used manure contaminated with a persistent herbicide.

Have a look at this thread............

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thats not good then!

This is the first time I have tried growing my own.  If I dug up the potatoes and planted something else would they suffer the same fate?

This link will tell you the crops most affected, so you could try something not listed.

Thanks for the links, they are very helpful.

I take it that these potatoes should be dug up and got rid of? Could they be left alone - if so would they still produce potatoes that we could eat?

I stand to be corrected, but I understand that if you do get a crop, it's safe to eat, however it's appearance may not be good.

Personally, I'd err on the side of caution & get rid & put something else in.

really sorry to hear about the contamination

Good choice on the sweet corn... but it's perhapps gettting a bit late in the season to grow it from seed... if you are going to try it from seed, make sure you get an early varity... or better still, see if your gardancenter has some plants.  (they might even be reduced at this time of year too!)

The seet corn is in - you were right cheap too!

Have had a look at my other veggies planted in my dodgy manure - it looks as if the leaves of the beetroot are curling too - gutted.....!!

I do find this whole episode very sad.

But anyway, good on you to get the sweetcorn sorted so quickly! Best of luck with them!

Next year, if you're going to use any manure then it's well worth starting of some toms or beans in a 50/50 mix first before you commit to spreading the stuff. At least you now know what signs to look out for!

All the best

Thank you!

Its my first attempt at growing veg so I'll put it all down to learning.  Luckilly I've also put some potatoes in grow sacks and they are coming up brilliantly.  This horse manure thing won't put me off - I think I've got the grow-your-own bug!

Oh hope things are OK - David austin roses are usually lovely quality, and you pay for it too.

Did the muck come from a stable yard?

not all roses are vulnerable, I have a Himalayan musk that succumbed but did grow out of it and survived, another rose I had, was completely unbothered by it, both were planted in a lot of muck that destroyed my tomatoes and beans
