Newbie potato question
« on: July 16, 2013, 20:46 »
This is my 1st year growing spuds, so I got a mixed pack with 8 varieties and popped em into 8 potato planters. Over time I earthed them up, but forgot to move the labels up duh!!!  I've had a hunt round but can't retrieve the labels without damaging the plant (or my hand!). So my question is, if a potato was intended for harvesting as new potatoes, what would happen if I left them grow until the foliage died back? Would they just grow bigger or would they be ruined?  I won't be making the same mistake next year!

Early spuds are essentially quick maturing an immature when you harvest them if you leave them in until the foliage dies back the will be bigger (hopefully) and with slightly thicker skins so will possibly store better.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

I've left them to grow on before and they've been fine.  Arran Pilots are usually eaten small but if you let them grow on they make fabulous creamy jackets.  I once found a load of Charlottes in the ground in November!  They were fabulous  :tongue2:  I'd planted them but the hedge grew over them so I missed them at harvest time.
