I have some Mizuna growing in pots, and I am waiting for them to grow into full sized plants before harvesting.

I have today found the following on my Mizuna plants:

1. Whitefly

2. Some kind of lavae (maggots) burrowing in the stems. (also buried in the compost). Could be thrips larvae?  (These maggots also ate my Radishes)

3. Black flies of some sort.


Will soapy water really get rid of all these or do I just go down to home base and get some chemical pesticide?

all are located outside.

try companion planting , these are plants that distract pests away from the crops e.g marigolds outside of greenhouses help to stop black flies in greenhouse

The flies could be where the maggots come from.

Either the one that eats raddish or cabbage root fly is also possible. If not strictly flies, could be flea beetle, maybe. White flies are common on brassica.

Anyhow, I'd bin them and sow again once this 'hot spell' is gone. They don't need to be in pots and don't know what full size you are expecting they grow a few inches. Cut and come again style if you leave some leaves behind you can get 2-3 cuts off them.

Loads of bugs about just now. I got my aubs out the greenhouse this morning for a bit of fresh air and a check on them and noticed aphids on them. I was going to spray them but I noticed loads of hoverflies having a feast  

Wish we'd got ladybirds. Not seen a single solitary one this year  :?
