Is chain link fox proof? Or chicken wire?
« on: January 09, 2012, 02:29 »
Hi everyone.
Im back with more questions lol.
I have made a run which is about 20 ft long and aprox 15ft wide n have put the house in the run, i haven't covered the run as it's too big..
I have used chicken wire to fence around (4ft high) but the fox comes at night n gets through under the wire.. If i use chain link and dig the ground and put mayb half a foot In the ground n secure it.. Is 5 and half ft high enough to keep the fox out? Or are they capeable of jumping or climing over?

Chicken wire should be a strong barrier, but you need to bury it down under the ground too as foxes are great diggers. Our run was fenced in 1.1 metre chicken wire which was looped right round underneath, so no chance of digging available. It was also roofed so we only ever saw the odd dent appear in the wire, where an attack had been foiled.

if you use welded wire mesh you can smaller holes which will also keep out rats and stoats/weasels etc, foxes can chew through chicken wire.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I agree with Joyfull here.  My aunt kept some quail and a fox chewed through two layers of chicken wire and killed the lot.  Weld mesh is a better idea.

Good luck  :)

Save your time digging into the ground and lay a 1' apron of weldmesh around the outside of the run (look at Eglu runs for the idea).

thanks for the replies everyone, i might just get the chain link 6ft high and dig half a foot in ground, and use the chicken wire to cover on top, as the house has its own run which has welded mesh. the chain link is for their playing area..

cheers people  :) :)

Chicken wire is good for keeping chickens in, not foxes out I'm afraid.  It was invented for thatched rooves originally, so I believe.

Hi chicken wire isn't strong enough to keep foxes out. chain link fencing is better but is unfortunately not heigh enough. i use fencing panels that have originally been used to keep poeple out of building sites, and that has worked most times but to make it fox proof 100%. it needs a roof and wire underground. hope that helps

You could use the chicken wire on top of the chain link fencing angling it outwards at 45 degrees this would make it much much harder for the fox to jump over. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

question
what would you class as 'fox proof' wire?
