Brambles!!!!!
« on: May 26, 2008, 21:04 »
I got my first allotment this week, very pleased.
Quite a large plot, nice position (and near the water trough).
It has a massive amount of brambles, which are now cut down to ground level and removed from the plot. I attempted to begin digging them out but the ground was solid.  I managed two roots in about an hour!
I need a quicker and easier way to rid the plot of brambles, any advice?

A mattock is useful.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I know a quick way, but I'm only allowed to explode one tactical nuclear weapon on the forum per week & I'm saving it up!

It's something I've not had to deal with fortunately, but this question has been raised before & I know others have recommended an 'Azada' or mattock.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Leave a few days, for after the rains and think of someone you really hate, will make great progress. 8)

leinad,
I inherited a large garden, 2 years ago, that was covered with brambles 8 - 10 feet high.
The pesky roots seemed to grow in knots and be cemented into the ground.
I needed a pickaxe to get some of them out.
The good news is that, 2 years on, and after a lot of hard graft, I only find the occasional bramble sprouting and now they are easy to pull up if caught when young.
If there is an alternative to hard work I just didn't find it, but now I'm reaping the rewards.
Stick with it and do likewise.
Good luck.
The successes and failures of each year keep me motivated for the following year.

I dug up my brambles (on a lottie 10 yrs ago) in the process of double digging that area. In the long run I think (especially after reading your comment) that it was probably easier than digging lots of individual holes, plus I was left with a gorgeous, deep dug and well manured bed.

I had (last week) the odd bramble in one of the new plots in the garden and it was a pain digging them out. There weren't enough of them to justify double digging though.

I think DD is referring to Roundup when he talks about nuking things ;)
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".
