Fox related...what's all that about then?
« on: September 24, 2009, 22:12 »
I live in a semi rural village, in a road of houses with decent sized gardens and we do indeed have foxes.

As far as I know we are the only people with chickens, so you would think our garden would show the most signs of fox damage..yes?....You would be wrong.

My Mum lives next door and her lawn looks like a small JCB went through it, holes everywhere!!! and lots of poo. The other side of us has had the same problem. Our garden, clear and no sign of any poo near the girls run either?????  I'm glad of course, but it still begs the question..."What's all that about then?"  ???

Hi Colette,
Don't get too confident, foxes bide their time, they watch until you make a mistake.

Are you sure it's foxes - could be badgers?

i will probably get shot down for my opinion but i tend not to give much though to foxes at all . I dont walk down the street with my two kids constantly looking for the dangers that apparently are everywhere these days as lives too short and about fun and not forever living on a knife edge  and im the same with the threat from foxes to my chickens . Yes i lock up the run at night but thats to protect from humans but foxes honestly never enter my mind and i refuse to believe the chief fox spy is watching me just incase i make a mistake

You are entitled to your opinion, and I also don't give foxes that much thought, apart from when I am building new pens or enclosures and on a night time when I lock them all up.
I never had a problem and thought there where no foxes about when I started keeping chickens, one night I forgot to lock one of the pens  :(  in the morning all of the chickens in there where dead or gone, I think there where about 20 growers.  >:(

It's definately foxes, we hear them (quite ghostly sounding) and we have seen them, when we get up very early!!!

The only time we have actually seen one showing interest, was in the snowy spell last year and he kept going around the perimeter of the run.  We shut the girls in their shed, it was very cold anyway. Then went round reinforcing the run and blocking the foxes ways in and out of the garden and my husband had a wee around the edge of the run as well....he wasn't amused!! but it seemed to work.

I know not to get complacent though, my girls are under lock and key as soon as the dusk comes!
