Mushroom Kits
« on: January 30, 2017, 20:42 »
Hi I have seen some mushroom kits in the garden centre. The box is about the size of a Family Circle biscuit tin. Has anybody ever grown them ? Are they value for money..do you get more mushrooms than if you bought them at the supermarket ? Or is it just a case of getting satisfaction from growing your own.

I bought some mushroom spawn last year and got two mushrooms. I found it quite hard to get the correct growing conditions mushrooms need.

I had a kit a few years back. I kept it under the kitchen sink. We got a few mushrooms but after a while there were a lot of very small flies everywhere. It was fun, but I would not get a kit just for the crop.

I ordered some of the plugs with spoors on them a few years back. What the seed company neglected to say in the catalogue was what you needed to do to grow them. Its only when the packet arrived that I found out you needed a large log from only certain trees, like Oak, and that having drilled and put the plugs in said log you needed to wrap it in a blag bag and keep it for several weeks at @21 degrees. the releasing it into the outdoors it needed shade and whilst still be warm.

Needless to say not one mushroom grew.

I am trying to grow Oyster mushrooms on coffee ground at the moment. I have everything in a plastic bucket in the living room and it looks good at the moment (it is a mushroom growing kit). I can let you know if it works.

i've tried a few different kits and spores (but not the one your asking about). you seem to need to the perfect environment otherwise they won't work.

from reading internet articles if you stumble across a place that they do well then you'll get a good crop. but it's very hard to try and create a perfect environment.

let us know how you get on if you try them.
