Well there are plenty of places to try...

This will give you plenty of info
http://www.thegardenersalmanac.co.uk

This isn't free but I think a few people here use it to plan their plot
http://www.growveg.com

Hope they help.
It's all too much!

I think you can get a free trial with growveg.com.  I did that last year but decided not to subscribe.  One thing it was great for was showing how far apart to plant different varieties.  You just click on the picture of the veg and it automatically puts a circle around it to show distance.  Very useful.

In agreement with all comments, between John's books and this website with its many experts in different fields('scuze the pun) - I don't think there's anything else you need.

Know I'll get shot down but What design?

An allotment plot isn't that big and I would have thought that you basically can plant blocks of something that you want a lot of, or rows of things that you don't want so much of but have a wider selection.

After that it is separation and whatever you want to munch on. ::) ::)
Then learning what will or will not grow for you where you are.
No web page will tell you that.

Get a pen, draw a rectangle and fill in the rectangle with rows and blocks, then transpose to the allotment.

Sometime I wonder what the world did before the www, that was pre 92/93 if I recall as that was about when the first web browser was available (mosaic).

Tells you about crop rotation, etc.  There's more to this place than just the forums. Explore and enjoy  :D
