Romanesco
« on: October 29, 2010, 13:10 »
Hi
Planted out some of these in the summer. (grown on up to 5'' pots) They are sturdy plants about 3 foot high but there is no sign of any head forming. The packet says ready from august ???.
Does anyone know if they will survive the winter, if there is hope for them yet, or should I be giving up now! I hope it is not the latter!

Thanks

Elaine

I have grown these in the past and have had heads forming late summer to early autumn. I'm wondering if you were a little late in planting out?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

The frost used to send the cauli heads to slime every year with romanesco, never did get one fit too eat.
I am resigned to the fact that the commercial boys grow a better cauli than i ever will.

My romanesco plants seem to have been in the ground forever and are very tall.  They have just starting showing heads of what looks like pale green purple sprouting broccoli. I can't see them ever developing the heads like the ones on the pack so i'm going to crop what's there and dig them out.  Wont be trying them again. :tongue2:

The heads on mine are about the size of a mug if that makes any sense I have about five plants and they have masses of big leaves but in the middle these green jewels. I shall grow more next year this was just a go to see they liked the plot. Mine went out late as well but they are in sheltered spot behind where the remains of the beans are.

I grew some last year, and went through the same experience. We did get some in the end (my records say April!). They were also pretty small when they did arrive. Hang on in there.

I've just thrown in the towel and harvested the spears today to use like PSB.  They are currently in the steamer and looking delicious.  Patience has never been my strong point. :nowink:

We grew some for the first time this year, infact first time for growing caulis on the lottie (its our second year) - they were lovely, not very large, but big enough to go with the sunday roast.
Had no luck with broccoli at all this year or last year though  - bolted.

Having looked at all the previous posts I thought,  my plants are the same as Elaine G's.

However I checked recently and they've formed some nice heads.  :)

As they're under cover hoping they'll survive any frosts

I've got 8 plants under debris netting, and the first head is about tennis ball size. The others look like they wont be long coming  :)
Cheers, Comfortably Numb.

I'm just off down the greenhouse. I won't be long ..........................
