Cheap bedding / hanging basket plants at Aldi again
« on: February 26, 2015, 12:56 »
Just a heads up that my local Aldi (Newcastle) have got the early season dirt cheap bedding plants in this year again (picked up a few this morning), so likely they're elsewhere as well

40 trailing lobellia for £1.99
24 Petunia for £1.99
Plus some others

Got a load of these last year and they were great in terms of value - had to pot them on into bigger modules pretty quickly as they were in tiny cells, but that's no great trauma really.

Considering B&Q will be selling 6 or 8 plants for £4 come May, so I'll be stocking up with another 80 or so lobellia and some more petunias the next time I'm passing by

They're great, BUT........................you have to have somewhere warm to grow them on, cos they can't go outside until the beginning of May ::)

Oh yes - mine are on the kitchen table for repotting, and will be in the Greenhouse till May.

For some I might just cut out the middle-man and pot directly into hanging baskets and hang up the baskets in the greenhouse

Having said all that. I was lazy and didn't pull out all the old bedding plants before the winter; and a few of last years lobellia seemed to have survived ok in a wind-free spot. Might leave them and see if they do anything  8)

I did well with their gernaiums last year, but this year I don't have a conservatory to bring them up in so I'm having to be much more restricted as I only have 1/2 sunny windowsills!

I wasn't perfect though  .  They have more bedding plugs next week, fuchsias, usually a pack of 6 for the £1.99 so I may just get the one pack!  We'll see...

Anyhow, day off work so off to the garden centre :)

A bit early to stock these really as most people do not have heated greenhouses or conservatories to bring them on. I agree they are good value if you can do this though.
