I think the point of the thread is that re-using stuff is better than it ending up in landfill

Absolutely my view too. Also, I felt compelled to say good morning to passers by (hence being offered the other wood) I stopped and chatted with some lovely people.
My husband's a water sign, I'm an earth sign, together we make mud :-)

My gardening diary is here - go on, have a peek , you might be able to help me!

I've found most people are delighted to have their skip emptied, so it never hurts to ask.  I've also found that once the locals know I am happy to accept their rubbish, they'll often ask me if I want something before they chuck it out - so then I don't even have to clean the skip rubbish off it!  Half my house is furnished with other folk's rubbish!

(I read an article about rubbish/recycling once that said people who hire skips in the south find the skip gets filled up overnight by their neighbours, while people who hire them in the north find the skip is emptied  overnight!  If that's true, I'm glad I live in the south as there is less competition for skip treasure  :))

Folks along my terrace always ask me before they take things to the charity shop, or throw them away!

If the old pine chest of drawers that they throw away can't be saved with some glue and a lick of paint, then they burn nicely in the woodburner

My recent 'rescued' items include a nearly-new food blender being thrown because a 'later model' had come out, a brand new summer skirt still with the shop price tag still on it, a pine bed frame (the mattress was soaked so I left that behind, but someone else was throwing out a nearly new one the same size!) and a small bookcase.  Plus enough ringbinders, paper, envelopes, pens etc to ensure I won't have to buy any stationery for at least a year! All of which were being sent to the tip!

Well, went and had a chat with the builder chap and he was very friendly as I was emptying his skip (I was considering asking to borrow his landrover but I think that's a cheeky step too far!), anyway, I got doors, 4 long and 4 short so I have 2 raised beds now (well actually I have a car full of doors because the snow came down so no way was I going to get teh car to the allotment). Anyway, whilst the chap was being friendly I said 'next thing you are going to tell me is there is a shed in the garden that you don't want'...he said there was one and if it is in good condition he'd keep it, but I think it will come my way if I am persistent! I might offer to provide some pots for when he puts it on the market so it looks pretty... hummm.

Do you want a bath? ours is coming out this week or next. Could be water storage or a pond. As for the doors I've got some as a manure storage area,or you could make a compost bin with them.

Just remember to always ask first, otherwise you can be charged with theft.

Shore up the sides?

Ever noticed the sign on the side saying 'Level load only' or 'NO asbestos'?  ;)

I never said it was right, just that it happens!

I do something similar when presented with a buffet and inadequately-sized plates...
