Title: Can I transplant a dwarf apple tree now?
Post by: Ahahah on November 04, 2012, 15:18
Hello! New to this forum. We have just taken on a new allotment, I shared another one for about a year with a friend at another site but its too far away for us and he is thinking of giving it up. I have there a small apple tree and wondered if I can bring it to the new site? I also have 10 raspberry canes that I am not sure if could b moved too. Any suggestions?

I should wait untill a period comes along where the soil is neither waterlogged or deep frosted.  But this is the time of year to carry out a transplant.   Don't forget, a rectangular  hole not a cylindrical one.

Cheers,   Tony.

Don't forget, a rectangular  hole not a cylindrical one.

Why is that?

Apparently it encourages the roots to find the corners and make their way out into the new soil rather than going round and round and in on themselves :)

Does this mean I am going to have to find some square plant pots for my new apple trees, which I am planning to put in containers?

Personally I'd wait until the leaves have been shed, which is the ideal time for pruning too.
