Courgette flowers?
« on: September 13, 2012, 01:49 »
Hi gang!  :)

I've heard that you can stuff and fry courgette flowers and have found a few recipes, but has anyone tried them?

I was also wondering if you could use squash flowers too and if there were any recipes that you could freeze or if you could freeze the flowers for later use?

Since this seems to be the year of 'excessive male flowers' it would seem a shame to waste them!

Mags  :)

I've tried them and I know some people adore them, but they just didn't do much for me.

The blossoms can be kept for a few days wrapped in a damp paper towel stored in a poly bag in the fridge. But they do not freeze well at all. Strictly a fresh dish.

And yes, squash blossoms can be used as well as zucchini (courgette) blossoms.

There's one method here.

Thanks Trillium!  I must admit, they don't took terribly tasty.

Maybe if they were used as a vehicle for some mouthwatering morsel, but then you'd have to seal them in some way...

My patty pans have the most beautiful, huge flowers (mostly male).  I may have to experiment... :tongue2:

that was one of the projects i wanted to do this year,i just adore stuffed courgette flowers but alas i have none of ny squashes that ever made it past the tiny seedling sage before the vandals struck ,but going through my seed pkts earlier this morning i was suprised at the amount i have left so next year, better security for my containers and then hopefully that will equal more blooms and therefore more playtime in the kitchen were i am at my most happiest   8)

Oh Dopey, they look scrummy!  :tongue2:

I think I am going to have to wait until next year now as since I thought of it, most of my flowers have died off. I had some beauts on my patty pans too... ::)

I know it's no consolation Jay but my courgettes and most of my squash haven't done very well this year (my biggest butternut is just over an inch long ) and as they say 'there's always next year'.  You could really do with a couple of trained triffids to see the 'little darlings' off!  :D

I think everything's suffered this year, even in the greenhouse.  I'd say our tomato and cucumber harvest is down by at least two thirds if not more  :(  Makes you wonder why you bother sometimes!  ???

Yum ... they look so good Dopey!  Interesting too - I'd have thought they'd be too delicate to withstand that process.  I agree that dishes like that are better the next day - the alchemy of the kitchen, eh?!  I've also had courgette flowers dipped in tempura batter and deep fried, and they are absolutely delicious (but definitely not a candidate for leaving till the next day - if you don't eat them immediately, they go soggy!!).

If you have a look you have to pack the pot, so there's no movement of the food, and cover them with some vine leaves as they cook to keep them down
