winter kill temperatures of winter-hardy vegetables
« on: November 12, 2022, 07:05 »
While looking for information on fava (broad) beans, I found the following link, which provides great information on what to expect regarding winter hardiness. Worth bookmarking IMO:

Nice link thanks

I'd always assumed the likes of tatsoi and komatsuma would die below -5c so interesting that they say -12c for them

My sister grows tatsoi in Indiana, colder than here in Georgia, but significantly warmer than it used to be.  She grew hers through the 2021-2022 winter.

That never would have happened in the indiana winters of my childhood and young adulthood, when we expected several days of -18 C or colder, and -25 C was considered quite cold, but not unusual.  Record cold there was -36 F  (-38 C) just a few miles southeast of where my family lived.

I'm surprised at the range for broad beans, from -4 C to -11 C (Aquadulce Claudia somewhere in the middle).

Yeah continental winters are no joke. In the UK we have dodo weather but an incredibly mild climate considering the latitude. It always annoys me when I am down the allotment during winter and so many people just don't bother growing anything for half the year, I always have something I can pick!

Yes, I think I actually grow more variety in the winter when compared to summer!

Winter cos and salad bowl always make it through the winter for me. If I haven't eaten them all. In fact covering them with a fleece kills them. It causes them to rot.
At the moment I have some rocket doing okay but covered in insect netting. Not rotting but I wonder if it's necessary?
Anyone grown it through winter?

Some varieties of Rocket, closest to the wild form, live through the winter, but don't grow much you can pick to eat. Understandable when it is a Mediterranean herb. The more recent types tend to die  :(

My salad rocket sits out uncovered. It would get eaten by flea beetles in the summer though.

I've found both wild and salad rocket to make it through the winter outside if it doesn't go cold enough and salad rocket will actually grow with mild weather in winter. Wild rocket just shuts down for a few months but then can grow again in spring, if it doesn't die.

I've not tried anything other than the generic types

Someone told me yesterday that there's is two year old rocket. As in this is second winter.
Need to make sure I don't cut it back to much. In fact take individual leaves of each plant, instead of using the scissors.

I will take note of that as I sometimes have problems with flea beetle.
