Manure on the asparagus?
« on: September 27, 2013, 16:58 »
First year of proper harvest next year and I can'T wait!   Asparagus is in raised bed and there is now about 5 inches of height left in the bed because the ground has settled.  I want to fill it up with rotted manure, but am not sure if the asparagus will mind?  Soil is clay with lots of compost added 3 years ago.   Opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Trill or someone else for that matter,
might well know better,
clay is good enough for ever,
some extra feed won't be a bother.

I would be more inclined to use a mix of compost and seaweed  :)
I cook therefore I grow

I top dress my asparagus bed with well rotted manure/compost every winter.
One of the books told me it was a good thing to do :)

Asparagus crowns work their way nearer to the surface over the years. Your aim should be to gradually form a mound along the row. One way to do this is to add manure each year, after the stems have been cut down, and then pull some earth over it from the sides. As you have clay soil you might add some sharp sand as well.

Deviating from the original thread, hope you do not mind. Do asparagus like lime? I intend to lime my plot next month.

I add rotted manure to mine yearly along with compost but not too much if your soil is clay. Normally it would be a good thing but clay soil can be sort of rich on it's own. Must be why I have 5 ft tall asparagus stalks by mid summer   :D

Asparagus like it a bit alkaline so a sprinkle of lime or wood ashes helps too.

Right, wood ash, manure, compost.  The shoots have come up all over the bed, so I don't really have a row any more to mound, but I'll mound it up round each of the shoots - like mole hills!
