Cleaning Curly Kale
« on: January 09, 2022, 19:26 »
Any ideas out how to get all the white fly and the white coating they leave, off the back of the leaves. I picked some today and blurgh  ::)
Despite soaking and brushing they still have 'added protein' that I don't fancy cooking  ::)

Yuck  :tongue2:  I hate that white stuff and have had trouble myself getting it off kale.    On flat leaved kale I wipe it with a wet dish cloth, but it takes a few goes to clean the leaves.  I don't know how easy that would be on curly kale.

Not sure on curly kale but on my other brassicas I find a drop of oil on top of a bowl of cold water & soak the leaves in that & rub them with my hand seems to work as the oil makes the unwanted bodies stick to the water rather than the edible leaves plus it seems to suffocate the unwanted bodies!

Best not to keep thinking about it  :nowink: Prepare and cook it, stuff it in the freezer for a month or so; by which time you'll have forgotten all about the extra protein.  ::)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's got those darn white fly on our curly kale I pulled up all of our kale in discussed  another gardener with some experience said I should have sprayed the kale when i first noticed the white fly with a weak solution of washing up liquid and water ?

I think this year I'm going to cover the crop with enviromesh and I've also bought grazers G3 spray to hopefully keep those pests at bay I've decided its time to sort out these pests once and for all that keep decimating our brassicas and I haven't given up on my own organic pesticide
