Same spot planting of a new plum tree.
« on: May 30, 2011, 15:19 »
Hi everyone.

I would like to plant a new Victoria plum tree in the same place as one recently removed with silver leaf.
Are there any methods of doing this safely, without the fear of losing a new tree.
There is nowhere else that it can go.

So far we have removed the infected tree and disposed of it, dug out and removed a 3ft circle of soil
aprox 15" deep, so we are now at soil pan level, which we have broken up as best we can.

We have thoroughly soaked the hole added some growmore and are going to fill it with a mixture of
fresh soil from another area and growbags/compost.

Do you think this might work.

Also isn't there some sort of micro organism that can be added around the area and to the
new root ball to help establish and build the immune system of the root system.

As usual your advice would be most appreciated.

I think you're thinking of microrrhizal (sp?) bacteria in the latter part of your post.

As for your main question, I don't know but I personally wouldn't risk it in case there is infected material in the soil.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

It's very tricky to replant fruit trees in the same position. There is a disease called specific replant disease.  The RHS have a good fact sheet:

Victorias are notoriously prone to silver leaf.  I would at least plant a different variety.
