Spinach 'Bordeaux'
« on: April 29, 2014, 15:32 »
Does anyone have any experience with this variety?

I tried it last year with pretty disappinting results (it either bolted or refused to grow at all) so I'm trying again this year with the old seed. I sowed nice and early in March and have some healthy looking seedlings growing.

The supplier (T&M) recommends thinning to a 2" spacing:

http://www.thompson-morgan.com/vegetables/vegetable-seeds/brassica-and-leafy-green-seeds/spinach-bordeaux-f1-hybrid/482TM

However, everybody else in the world says spinach should be thinned to at least 6". So, trust the packet?

So bigger spacing for bigger leaves?

In that case I'll thin again at the baby leaf stage and hope to get some cooking spinach too.

I'm growing Bordeaux for the first time this year: not much happening, I have to say. However, the spacing is right for baby leaves for cut and come again picking. They will grow bigger if you leave them. Before this attempt with Bordeaux, I grew Scenic (also from T&M) at that spacing and had a fantastic crop. A row a couple of metres long provided me with a carrier-bag's worth every few days. I think I'll be going back to Scenic...

It is very attractive, purple veined, dark green, arrrow shaped leaves.  It will grow very tall if you let it, about four foot or so

Thanks compostqueen. I bought it because of the colour and shape. I presume it gets quite coarse at four feet tall. I'm growing it at close spacing for cut and come again cropping. Assuming I actually get a crop!

Edited: to remove remark already covered.

Mine will be coming out in time for the beans to go in, in June. So here's hoping for a decent crop before then.
