So, here we are getting everything ready for our clutch of girls arriving in early June. I'm reading everything I can lay my hands on and we are doing everything we can to make sure we give our girls a wonderful life.
Roast chicken for tea tonight and as I prepared it and put it into the dish, I suddenly looked at it lying there and thought..."oh my goodness". It sounds obvious, but I suddenly looked at the chicken in a new way.
Has anyone been unable to eat chicken since keeping hens? Or am I just being soft??

I've been vegetarian for years, but my mum stopped eating chicken a couple of weeks after we got them because she couldn't bear to eat it anymore. She's now a fully fledged veggie too =)
-
Not just me then. :)
-
We rear our own meat chickens, so I have no trouble at all eating roast chicken! lol
-
After many years on a family beef farm and seeing poultry reared and killed up close I have no problem with it. Roast beef for tea tonight.
Just man up :tongue2: :D

Keeping chickens has never stopped me from eating poultry. BUT - they have to be reared under the best of free range conditions.
-
mee give up meat......... NEVER!

I found the first ever egg from my first chickens a little odd to eat but after 2 or 3 it became less of an issue. I can't say I've ever had a problem with chicken as a meat though.
-
Oh dear, you're all so heartless......just kidding! :tongue2:
-
Well did you eat the chicken? :)
-
Lol, yes I did. ::)
-
It won't have been as tasty as raising your own table birds. The difference is unbelievable. ;)
-
Yes, I can imagine. Free-range meat is completely different to commercial stuff, isn't it? We're only going to keep them as pets with added eggs. :) Can't WAIT to eat our first egg, got to wait a while yet though as our girls won't be ready til early June.

Hi there, we had our first egg yesterday and it was lovely, we got another today from the same hen so just looking forward to the other two starting to lay as well, I did remark when eating the egg that it's strange when you 'know the hen' that may sound odd but I will be honest and say that I can only eat free range chicken now and only eat chicken about once a week now, I am so much more aware of commercial farming and welfare and that matters to me, I was asked yesterday if I could eat my hens and I said no as I have named them but if I had a greater number of them and didn't name them I think I perhaps could, our lot have a good life, I think having hens for the last 7 weeks has made me realise how blinkered the supermarket purchase of poultry had made me, enjoy your eggs, am gonna go make a cake with the one we got today!! :D

No problem eating my own chickens. Or ducks. Or rabbits.
But then, I'll eat anything... ::)
-
Am able to eat roast bird but for some reason not able to call it roast chicken.
When one of them was ill for a few weeks i could not eat roast chx then for fear of putting some sort of curse/dampers on her recovery. Weird or what!

I have a feeling my chicken-eating days will be over once I have my own girls rosey around the place! ::)
-
That would be a shame Mrs Apron! Chicken is good for you! and tastes lovely! lol
