I'm the same with chives, can I grow then , can I 'eck! I've even bought the ready growed ones in a supermarket and they promptly die on me, now my late Mum, dear of her, she grew them like billy o, and had to dig clumps out to give people.

Is it my soap?????

thing with all alliums is you get a better germination with fresh seed; so for chives - take the seed heads from someone else's plants [as the heads stop flowering and you can see the black seeds have formed], and plant them a head at a time into modules or small pots. Then once they germinate - transplant clump by clump.

I have terrible trouble germinating chives from packets; but from the seed heads they ALL germinate. Mine are just coming to this point now so if mine are, then other people's are. Just grab a few seed heads and get them sown. Don't bother to take them out of the heads; half fill a pot, pop the head in, and cover with soil.

I've never had that; if you grow in modules and plant out once they are a few inches tall then they are usually too big by then to be interesting to them.

For the past 10 years spring onions have grown well in my veg garden.  This year it seems they have other ideas.  The first lot of seed I sprinkled I admit was last years and about 2 pathetic seedlings emerged.  So, a couple of weeks ago I bought myself some new and merrily sowed away.  I'm still waiting...

I like it too.  Now all I need is to find someone with some chive flowers I can appropriate  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

PM me your address and I'll send some to you - I took a load off mine today and they are just ripe so I can throw some your way if you want.
