Sowed mine in a container this year - two sowings and not one seed has germinated.

One lady near me module sows absolutely everything, including acrrots and parsnips --- I don't know how well they fare in comparison to direct sown as it is a bit early to tell

Does work if you transplant when very small - seen it done and so long as you don't damage the tap root you're away.

I'm way too disorganised to attempt this

I did end up module sowing parsnips in desperation this year but planted them out painstakingly one a time without bending the little roots ( I hope)

Time will tell

Don't know if I will be popular saying this but I've never grown spring onions before but I just sprinkled the seeds in one of my raised beds and they all seem to be growing remarkably well.  Sorry - I'll duck now before I get hit!

I sowed my spring onions in pots at the beginning of march and they are lovely strong standing up onions but still not ready to eat yet. :)

i've had hassle in the past. This year sowed them in 3 1/2pots under glass then used a bulb planter when 3ins high and put them outside. On my 3rd sowing now and doing well. Easy to pick as a bunch too!!!!!!

I've sown in modules again this year after a first short-row sowing out on the plot. Both work well for me.

Reason for sowing into modules (a sprinkling of seed in each) is so that I have some follow-on spring onions to plant out.... my aim is to keep them going as long as possible.

This year I have the ordinary white variety and the red skinned ones - these make a change & look a bit different - good mild flavour too.

I'm the same with chives, can I grow then , can I 'eck! I've even bought the ready growed ones in a supermarket and they promptly die on me, now my late Mum, dear of her, she grew them like billy o, and had to dig clumps out to give people.

Is it my soap?????

I'm trying spring onions in cells (several attempts so far) for the first time and still barely manage to get any to germinate. The ones that do germinate never really seem to do well. I'm going to try sowing into a few large pots and see how I get on.

I may not be able to grow spring onions well, but chives are well out of control. I had to pull clumps of them up the other day. They've been in 5 years now, and were originally two pots from seperate supermarkets and to different varieties, one fine and strong (T) and one mild and fleshy (L). Usually chop them to the ground in succession so there are aways fresh growing ones.

They are a bit on the slow side so sow and sow again a week or two later.... that way you shouldn't run out.  ;)
