Spring Onions
« on: June 23, 2010, 20:51 »
why is it that I cannot grow spring onions? All of the ones this year have been eaten by snails. For some reason I never manage to get an edible spring onion, I'm not much better with normal onions.

I have difficulty too. I sowed half a pack in a block this time.....very sparse. And difficult to weed!

Grow them in pots and keep them out of reach of snails/slugs. I try to keep a constant supply of spring onions by sowing every 3 or 4 weeks in containers. In winter I bring them into the greenhouse.

Mine were in pots this year the snails still got them.

In the last two weeks we have had
snail crawling across stairs window
snail crawling up front door
snail taken to work on my car
noticed a snail on next doors car
and best of all a snail sitting in my beer trap just above the beer laughing at me

I am so sick of snails

Well, have a good laugh at me to make you feel better!
I though I was being over-run with the blighters when I kept finding loads of what I thought were snail eggs in my pots when tipping out to pot on. Squish squish I went on the little brown (and yellow!) spheres. Die, you varmints!!!
Now realised they're fertiliser put in by the plant nursery.........Doh! :nowink:

I couldn't even get them to germinate in pots so the snails went hungry too.

I usually have no probs with mine until that is this year, won't germinate.  Got some new seed to try, although the other should be ok.

I've had trouble with them this year.  So slow to germinate that by the time they did the weeds were so big I couldn't weed them. In fact I pulled the lot out- weeds and onions- only yesterday.  Good idea sowing in pots, I'm going to try that :)

I can't get spring onions going on my plot if I sow direct so now I sow in cell trays putting 6 or so seeds in each cell, then I plant the whole thing out as a cluster.  I usually do a block with clusters a hand span apart.

Works for me  ;)

I'm going to have a go at this because they just get swamped at the plot amongst the weed seedlings    :tongue2:

I cluster sow all sorts - spring onions, beetroots, normal onions, salad leaves.......You get smaller less perfect veg but more of it overall and it works for me cos I can plant out and weed round them quickly on the plot.

Gets me more tut-tutting and eye rolling from the traditionists with their rows but then they sigh at my plot full stop.  I don't even have proper flowers like gladdioli and dahlia.....I have cosmos , pot marigolds and nasturtiums.  They all love ribbing me about it
