you know, I almost forgot about my leeks! Put them in cat litter trays months ago, and watered them almost automatically without thinking about it. Then the other week I noticed the thickness of them - actually really pencil thickness..so in they went.

Yet last year I really didnt bother till they were that thick - I planted them when they got pretty tall and although they were fairly spindly I got a fab crop of them from the late autumn.

It doesn't really matter how thick they are when you plant them. They'll still grow. Mine are usually drinking straw thickness and they still manage to end up as thick as a spade shaft.

Mine from seed are still like grass seedlings so ........whispers in shame...........I bought some a couple of weeks ago and planted those

They were a bit skinny but seem to be making up ground now.

I planted two cat litter trayfulls. One went in last week even though they were not pencil thickness, the other will go in when I get some more ground, ie when I dig some spuds up. By then they might be the "right" size. I found last year that they only seemed to take off when I put them in the ground - possibly not enough goodness in the litter tray.

I've got loads waiting, and some of them are actually pencil thickness - never thought I'd see the day  :)
Trouble is they're going to have to go in after something else - and my first earlies are a bit behind I think.
Oh well.. I'm sure something will make room for them.  Might put my superdooper crop rotation plans out of the window!
Lotty holder since Aug 09... I've FINALLY finished clearing it! On with the p.lanting  ....
