iF you plant them early like me make sure there is some soil covering the shoots - and I will be adding some fleece over the top to protect against any late late frosts which can happen.  A lot of the books just say earth up the emerging shoot to protect from frost.

I could be wrong here WG but I seemed to have read somewhere that the chits get too leafy if left in direct sunlight and there is also a risk of scorching them, bit like emrging seedlings should be out of direct sunlight.

Thanks Aidy.  I'm not a chitter myself but was interested to know.  Direct sunlight isn't usually too much of a problem for me in March anyway      It has been unseasonably nice weather recently tho.

Kerry, depends on what you want from your spuds, some believe that having only 1 chit so to speak gives you a smaller number of spuds but bigger, on my new spuds I plonk them in no matter how many chits are on, on my main crop I stick to 4 chits and scrub the others off.

Thanks Aidy,

Been shoving 'em in buckets for years, but getting into it in a bigger way now we've got two veggie beds in the garden. Just want to make sure I get the best out of everything.  :D

I've planted my Arran Pilots and I'll put me Pentland Javelins in next week - that makes me sound as if I know what I'm doing doesn't it?
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Got my spuds in this week: first earlies - "Rocket", and maincrop "Desiree".

I chitted the earlies, but didnt bother with the maincrop - I read somewhere thats its more important to chit the earlies :?:

There's a video clip somewhere on the Gardener's World website with Monty Don doing a test between chitted and unchitted potatoes and even he was surprised at what he got. The chitted earlies harvested better than unchitted earlies, but the chitted lates didn't do nearly as well as the unchitted lates.

Over here we just don't bother with any chitting other than what our own seed potatoes decide they want to do. We just dig a hole, drop it in, cover and harvest later. If we want earlies, we carefully hand dig into a thriving patch, steal 1 or 2, cover it up well and take more from other plants. We're firm believers in KISS (keep it simple, stupid).
