perpetual spring onions?
« on: March 12, 2007, 12:39 »
Hi!   I have vague recollections of my Dad's friend giving him some perpetual spring onions when I was a kid.  As we weren't very adventurous in our food back then we didn't use them up quick enough and they threatened to take over the garden.  Dad eventually dug them all up.  Anybody know what I'm talking about and can you tell me where to get some please.

Welsh tree onions perhaps?  I tend to use chives since they are certainly perennial.

Thanks for the web address whisky golf.  Never heard of welsh tree onions before mind.  Can't imagine what they'll look like.  Bit difficult to wear in your lapel on St David's day I imagine!

I've got Welsh Onions.  I grow them in a pot but will be putting them in the allotment now I have one.

We call them Egyptian or walking onions over here, Annie. All you do is plant them and stand back. They'll walk everywhere they can and all the little bulbils on top will produce more when the main stem bends over for them to root. No special food or treatment needed for them, just soil, any kind. Tougher than old boots, they are.

Found this one - you can order on line, whereas I think the link WG found was just to show you where that nursery was:

May get a packet myself.

http://www.victoriana.ws/Product.asp?PID=508&P=Siberian_Everlasting_Onion_Seed

£3.95 for post though - ouch, twice Thompson & Morgan!!!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Oh how I love playing with Google!

Have a look at this:

http://www.cnseeds.co.uk/herb_cat/a1_herbs.htm

You need to scroll down & look under Allium Fistulosum

These people have the white ones at £2.50 for 10g  and the red for £3.10 for 10g - about 5,000 seed! You have to add VAT.

This price includes postage, the drawback is the £15 ,minimum internet order. They also accept phone, fax & email orders, inference here is there is no minimum order

The postage that company charge for a packet of seed is about twice what T & M charge.

Got you. However will not complain about T&M at the moment,I ordered some shallots and they were giving a load of free onions too, these free onions were not available so they sent a £3 voucher and a new catalogue which had a £8 voucher.I am not complaining! They also sent 20 extra tubers with the potatoes,we have no idea where to shoehorn these in.
