Update on our allotment
« on: March 11, 2007, 17:22 »
Hi, I put my first posting on this website at the end of October when we took on a wild and weedy allotment here on the NE coast. Well, we've weathered a wet winter and are nearly half way up the plot, having dug a series of small areas along the way. I've had great satisfaction taking the wicken home to put in the green bin as a treat for the local council. We've planted 8 raspberry canes, red currant, blackcurrant and gooseberry bushes and have a clump of step over rhubarb (!) - which sprouted in the middle of a path. The ground is ready for potatoes - including pink fir apples - and asparagus - all to be planted mid April.  I spend at least two hours a day down there, making the most of this spell of nice weather, and am loving every bone-aching minute. Julia's prepared a strip for her runner beans and sweet peas, and built a cunning little wall alongside from the turfs, to grow pumpkins on. Wonderful life, innit !!!   Thanks all for your help and encouragment, answering questions and giving such great advice.  Have a great Easter. Jean
Still glowing, still growing, still going strong!

Hi Jeanie,
Sounds like you've been very busy.
I love your rhubarb-with-attitude .... we have a globe artichoke in the middle of our lawn for a similar reason; it just grew there and is so successful there that we just mow round it! :)

Plant plenty.  Celebrate success.  (Let selective memory deal with the rest.)

Good hear that you are still at it, many fall at this stage when they realize what a lot of work has to be put in, you will see great rewards come summer for all your hard work that you have done.
