watercress alternative?
« on: March 05, 2007, 09:56 »
Can you recommend a substitute for watercress?  I love watercress, and can't find seeds for it, and I think you have to have certain conditions to grow it?....is there something else with similar taste that I could try to grow?

Think i saw somewhere a referance to something called ground cress.
Guess its like water cress without the water, ie. sow in the ground probably have to keep pretty damp.

Nasturtium leaf is quite similar but try this.  Buy a pack of salad watercress from the supermarket.  Choose a dozen with strong stems and put into a glass of water until roots appear.

Meanwhile, bury an empty plastic tub in the garden so that it just below the surface.  Fill with soil or compost, little or no drainage holes.  Plant one or two rooted segments per tub.

If it won't root for you, I can mail you some later in the season.

Yes, I grew the American land cress last year.  It was very successful and tasted great.   :D

Well, I think Herb Rocket is very much like Watercress in flavour.
We grew some in the greenhouse, hardened them off and have just planted them out. I think they grow very fast - like a rocket :)
