Climbing rose - buds failed and yellow leaves
« on: June 15, 2011, 15:40 »
I'm growing a noisette climbing rose in a pot on SE facing wall. Has been great for 2 years . Fed it early spring (with handful of rose food)and it produced masses of flowers. Fed it again couple of months later and a while later I noticed yellow leaves and buds which are soft and opened brown. No more flowers left now but perhaps it's finished anyway :(. Still a few yellow leaves but mostly green so I think it has survived. :)
I  watered it fairly regularly during very dry spell.
Could I have overfed or over watered  ????

Also I would like to add some more compost to the pot as there is a 3 inch gap between the level of the compost and edge of pot as I guess the original compost has settled.
Is it worth trying to get the plant out and out some more compost at the bottom of the pot and if so what type of compost should I use?

Thanks for looking at this :)

I'd give it a few liquid feeds to keep it going till it's dormant in the winter and then pot on or just change compost.

What size pot is it and what compost did you use.

It hasn't got blackspot has it?...noisettes are beggars for getting that and losing their leaves....my Gloire de Dijon has done just that ::)

Thanks for replying.
It's pot is 18" diameter and 17" high.  Rose bush is about 30" high.
Not sure what compost I used but suspect it was from our local family run garden centre where they make their own and it's lovely fine black stuff!
No sign of black spot.

Try to get it into a bigger pot if possible, and change the compost to a loam based john Innes No 3. This is the type for permanent planting, and won't settle in the pot :)

Lucky you with no blackspot :)
