Help with plants/grasses that like the shade ...
« on: September 19, 2008, 13:46 »
Hi everyone

Would be very grateful for some help with the above!

We've just moved our pond over to the other side of the garden (to give us more space to grow even more veggies etc   :D ) and it's in a fairly shady spot (garden fence means the area doesn't get the sun until late afternoon/early evening).

So, I'd love to put some grasses and plants around the pond to make it look nice (just grass at the moment) but am thinking that I ought to pop those that like the shade there ........ if anyone has any recommendations (not too large ! lol) I'd be very pleased to hear them !

TIA xx

Think iris like shade and they like the damp round ponds?
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Iris like sun.
Other things that like the shade:
Privet, laurel (portugal laurel looks good by the water), yew, golden elder, box, shrub honeysuckle, periwinkles, bugle, Christmas and lenten roses, ivy, ferns, japanese maples.
Good luck
John

hi, those plants that johndeb mentioned ARE good for shade, and will look nice, but please be aware that some of them are extremely poisonous (particularly yew, privet and laurel0 so dont put them where any creatures including children might be tempted to eat the berries - or leaves come to that!

there are several bamboos that like shade too which would like
