Carrots and beetroot

Hi
ok so i am really new to all this and showing it now by asking - how do i know when my carrots and beetroot are ready to harvest?, cos i cant see under the ground to see if they are ready
please dont laugh!!

Beetroot you will see above the soil. They are great, (so I'm told as I don't like them), when they are golf ball size,but you can let them grow bigger.

Carrots, you can scrape a bit of soil away from the top. If the top is 1/2 wide, or perhaps even a bit smaller, they should be great as baby carrots.
