Planting up my pension fund
« on: January 25, 2009, 19:44 »
With the price of Christmas trees last year in mind and having some spare land at home -- I am thinking about planting it with NORDMANN Trees  which seem to be the most expensive ones at Christmas. It would also provide wildlife space for a few years as well,
Does anyone know where to source either seeds or seedlings please

that's a good plan Richard  :D  sorry, don't know any suppliers, but surely an internet search would point you in the right direction?

For information the various leads took me to Crowders Nurseries webpages and I got a quote for seedlings.

Don't buy seeds - they are tough to germinate and start very slowly.  We get our plants from Ashridge Trees - four year old seedlings, transplanted once (not counting when they are lifted for us).  Great plants - you can find them in the evergreens and conifers section at http://www.ashridgetrees.co.uk/

You might also think about joining the BCTGA (British Christmas Tree Growers Assn). It costs £20 and it means you can get to visit other small growers and learn all the mistakes they made.  Even if you only subscribe for one year it is well worth it.

Good luck

many thanks John, I had virtually decided against seeds from the off and had set out to procure 3 year old seedlings. Nothing is worse than having space filled with pots that never show germination. Your advice is taken on board gratefully and I will follow up on all your suggestions, thanks again
