Turf compost

I've just swapped plots on my allotment and a small area of it has been covered by a lawn.  However, as we all know, we can't eat grass (a bit on the bland side).  Anyway, I do know from experience that when you cut turves, you place them grass to grass, roots to roots - this way, it will compost down.  However, I've also been told (and I'm not sure about) that if you cut the turves, then dig a trench, lie the turves grass down, then pile the soil on top, this will compost it as well.  Is this correct or will I end up with grass coming through?  I would value your opinions in this.

You should have no problem if you dig it properly with a spade. It helps to cut/strim the grass short.

Follow what it says in every gardening book. Start by taking out a trench and barrowing the soil to where you will finish. Turn the next spit into the trench carefully turning the turf into the bottom and so on across the plot. Fill in the trench at the end with what you barrowed.
