Melons in the greenhouse...
« on: May 31, 2008, 23:26 »
I've got a couple of melon plants that I want to put in the greenhouse...

should I just plant them in a grow bag and let them ramble away on the floor or will I be able to grow them up a cane? I'm wondering how big and heavy the fruits (if I get any) will be?

Melons are not huge, but can be heavy. I've never grew them upwards, but you can do with extra support for each fruit, a sack of some sort.

I lost my Minnesota melon seed packet     Can't find it anywhere  :(
so, sowed some other mini varieties and plan to grow them either in the greenhouse or up the plot in a makeshift frame.  I think they take up a lot of room even for the smaller fruited ones

They say to support the weight of the fruit. Maybe some fruit nets like you get oranges in from the supermarket would be ok

Mine might not even come to anything as they are still seedlings

Thanks....

As I've no staging in the greenhouse yet, just growbags, I might just put them in a grow bag on the 'empty' side and let them wander for a bit!

I've got some cardboard they can travel on if they want.

Yes, I was giong to say, at least keep them off the ground, but what I did last year, was I had a bit of wire fencing, the really stiff stuff about door sized, and I put it over the top of the melon plants, about 3 inches above the soil mound I was growing them in, and the plants grew up through the mesh and the melons (until they fell off and didn't ripen!) sat on top of the mesh.

I'd love to get some to ripen this year if I can!!!

We grew them last year and as the fruit began to develope hung it inside the foot of an old pair of tights . short clear socks suspended from the crop bars above - grew 14 fruit from 3 plants before the damp killed the planst off - last years summer was not good - we have another 4 plants in thei year - we would have had more than 20 fruit if they had all had the chance to ripen
