layer pellets
« on: January 28, 2009, 19:01 »
as some of you will know I resently had a brain storm  ???and took on four ex bats
I do not know what the previouse people fed them but they will not eat layer pellets.
they are thin and need fattening. at the moment we are giving them a veg mix with the layer pellets mixed in but they still manage to leave some of the pellets, on advice received we do not feed them much corn. Question is what is the best way to fatten them? please

You will never make a hybrid chicken fat dugless!!  They are bred as egg layers, so all the goodness goes into the eggs, not on their bodies.  In their previous lives, they may have been fed mash, but when we had our ex batts, we fed them on pellets and they soon got used to them.

Keep their treats for the afternoon, and just feed them their layers pellets in the morning when they are hungriest.

Don't worry, they will be fine!!!

Grannie Annie knows best!!!!!  Our ex-batts were fed on mash, but we are gradually introducing pellets and treats for the afternoon.  Chickens are a funny lot...they are really hardy but boy oh boy do we all worry about them!!!     Keep up the good work you are doing great!!!!!!!

Might it be worth trying to dampen a few pellets to see if that makes them more palletable in the first instance - you would need to clean out daily any not eaten as the damp mash would grow unhealthy things very quickly. Just a thought.

That is exactly what my brother has done in the past and it worked well.

As stated in the post we tried that putting them in the veg mash, and as a matter of cause as we do not want to atract rats :tongue2: we always remove all the food every evening and the utencils are washed ready for the next day. I have done what Grannie Annie sugested they were unhappy to start with but like she says they soon went and started eating the pellets, thank you all for your replies.
