Apple Cider Vinegar...
« on: November 01, 2009, 21:07 »
Probably a silly question but is all ACV the same? Is that sold for horses the same as the stuff sold for chickens? Hubby came with some from the horsey shop when he bought Hemcore, will it be OK for our girlies? They have a dog bowl full of water, changed about a half dozen times a day. What quantity of ACV to water as in 'tea or table spoons' approximately  ;) And do I add at every change of water throughout the day or just the once? Do you give it the girls every day, week or just now and again? Sorry.. so many questions.. want to be sure I'm doing everything right for them if possible  :)

The horsey stuff is just what you need  :D I add 5ml per litre and change daily and I use for five days a month (all in a row).

Hi Neil, I believe it's good for their digestion and also discourages internal worms. Also not to be confused with Cider Vinegar from supermarkets this stuff has lots of bits/sediment in it.

Some chucks don't like the taste, so if using for first time, watch to check they are drinking. Puddle water, not such a good thing really, risk of picking up parasites etc.  Though given a choice, girls seem tol head for the muckiest water source they can find!

Flowerpot, good to know that our girls aren't the only ones who think that muddy water is the equivalent of Chicken Champagne! ::) A leak in their roof plus heavy rain = muddy puddle = stampede of hens to grub around in it! Mind you I must admit that I love to see them with muddy feet and beak tips  :tongue2:

The vinegar for hens etc is unpasteurised and has lumps floating in it  :)  The sediment is known as "the mother" and is full of all good things apparently.

I have bought some unpasteurised ACV from a cider farm as it's good for humans too.  I've been drinking it for about a month now - just a few tablespoons in fruit juice or spring water etc 3 times a day. It tastes like cider so I've no complaints  ;)
