I have had these Broad beans and peas in the raised bed for some weeks with not one blemish. In this last week the leaves are being ravaged by tiny slugs and various size snails. I have put organic friendly pellets on the ground but this has not stopped them. I also go out at night with a torch and pick all the snails off.

Firstly, will the leaves being shredded effect the growth of the peas/beans and secondly, why have they left it until now to start the assault?

I cant answer your question as to why the slugs have only just started causing chaos but can reassure you that you are not alone! I have tried the old trick of putting eaten grapefruit halves on my raised border and it is working a treat. Each morning i lift the little colourful domes and find a family of tiny grey slugs sheltering underneath . I quicly dispose of them and head for work. So far no further damage has occurred.
