Title: White yolk?
Post by: Mrs Sparkle on October 22, 2008, 08:19
Hi all
I was asked last night why they had an egg with a white yolk.
Does anybody have the answer? :)

My silkies first eggs were diappointingly pale. :(
A couple of possible reasons come to mind, lack of artificial colourant in the feed, lack of grass/greens (not sure about that as silkies were on my lawn at the time ;) but it's supposed to give dark yolks) also maize ("corn") is supposed to add colour to the yolks but I don't recommend too much of that.
I think some hens just lay eggs with darker yolks than others. :|

Some of mine when I first got them had very pale yolks, they had been stuck in one of theose container things some supermarkets use for storage    Not much natural light & no grass.

It took them 3/4 days to actually step out on to the grass, but once they did their yolks gradually got more of the nice yellow colour we would expect :D

Sometimes one egg out of a day's clutch will have a very pale yolk, despite each girl's fair share of greens.  Sometimes they'll have nothing but pellets and one yolk will be positively orange!  I put it down to being young and still learning.
