asparagus picking
« on: May 01, 2010, 12:39 »
I have harvested several lots of asparagus but have made a hash of some of them ie) cutting some off perfectly but a few asparagus next to those have got bashed and cut into by the asparagus knife. I assume that is ok in that it will only be those bashed spears that will not grow rather than the rest of the plant.

Also, some spears have grown several feet tall and are quite thin and look like they are starting to flower. Do I just leave them to do their thing?

The long thin ones, you chop as normal, don't let them grow.  I just leave them at the side of the asparagus bed.  Sorry about bashing them, I do the same, because they are under the soil, they are the casualties of war :(  Don't worry, you will get more growing.  You only let them grow after six weeks - that is the picking season for English asparagus I'm sorry to say :(  After that, you let them grow and flower
